ADE Sound Lab confirms Roger Linn for MusicTalks

Monday, 15 July 2019
The early AKAI MPC innovator Roger Linn will be back at ADE Sound Lab to focus on the development of his drum machines, followed by a Linnstrument workshop.

After recent conference news about Essam Jansen and Alex Hes talking at ADE University and ADE being on the lookout for cultural collaborations we continue with the creator of the LinnDrum returning to the ADE Conference stage.

Has anyone got their sonic signature on a great spread of music like Roger Linn? He's perhaps most famous for revolutionizing electronic rhythm making, not once, but actually twice: first by designing the first sampling drum machine, the LM-1 and its follow-up to the LinnDrum. Secondly by creating the Akai MPC range of samplers. Those early drum machines came to define the sound of the 1980s, from the biggest pop acts down to soul, boogie and experimental oddities that are now staples for crate-digging DJs.

The MPC, of course, helped to define the sound of golden age hip hop, and added aliveness to beat programming which makes it still promised today, and its layout endlessly copied in other devices. In 2011 Roger Linn received a technical Grammy Award for his contributions to the music recording industry.

Linn has never stopped designing and innovating, though, developing all kind of sequencers, effects and other devices. And as a musician himself, he's always aiming to make interfaces more intuitive and physical, the latest manifestation of this being the Linnstrument controller, launched in 2015. His ADE MusicTalks will focus on his history and the development of his drum machines, and will be followed by a Linnstrument workshop.
