Global South: From Extraction to Exchange

Global South: From Extraction to Exchange
Speakers: Eli Iwasa & more to be announced
Moderator: Leila Fataar
The Global South isn’t an emerging force in music. It’s already shaping the soundtrack of global culture.
From Africa and the MENA region to Latin America, music ecosystems that have long driven creativity and innovation are increasingly influencing what the world listens to now and next. Yet while music travels effortlessly across borders, opportunity, investment and ownership don’t always move with it.
As global attention grows, how do we ensure success creates reciprocal value rather than one-way extraction? What does meaningful exchange look like in practice? And what responsibility do artists, labels, festivals, streaming platforms, brands and media have in building stronger music ecosystems, not just benefiting from them?
Bringing together voices from across Africa, the MENA region and Latin America, this session moves beyond the conversation about the Global South to one led by the people shaping its future.
Together, they’ll explore how the global music industry can evolve from extracting cultural value to creating partnerships that strengthen local ecosystems and redefine the future of music.
The time of the event is still to be announced.
