Find out what's on offer in Amsterdam East

Wednesday, 09 October 2019
Getting to the unusual or exquisite places in the midst of ADE is not always easy with a program consisting of almost 200 locations and 2.500 artists. Therefore our team has created several routes trough the different districts of Amsterdam, which will give you an idea of what to expect and where.
East

Looking back at the tours trough Noord and West, we continue with the Eastern district and its go to's.

Looking back at the tours trough Noord and West, we continue with the Eastern district and its go to's.

This year's ADE features almost 200 venues - all spread across Amsterdam - playing host to different festival and conference events throughout the week. This time we're highlighting the Eastern district of Amsterdam, which makes a big contribution to ADE's cultural program and houses some of the larger night venues.

Vinyl Markets and AlgoRaves

After traversing Amsterdam's city center, head towards the tram and subway stop Wibautstraat. Upon leaving the station, you will find the Volkshotel, a former newspaper headquarter that today houses 172 hotel rooms. The hotel has become a creative hub that has been a stalwart of the ADE program for many years, with events ranging from pop-up markets to club nights. Drop by and discover new music at the Good Music Vinyl Market, which offers affordable records, lots of good music, and (local) beers.

Volkshotel's basement is also known as DOKA. It harbors movie showings and club nights, and is draped in a living room-esque vibe that is as cosy as it is intimate. Thursday sees a showing of the documentary Synthetic Pleasures (1995), while on Friday you can enjoy some live coding sessions, also known as AlgoRaves, where the music and visuals are coded live. Sunday sees a line-up with the likes of DJ Spinna, Kamma, Margie, Masalo, Nevill Mitchel and a yet to be announced guest hailing from Rush Hour.

From
ADE University to the tropics
Heading further east you can take a stroll through Oosterpark, where you will find the Generator Hostel. It is the home base of ADE University, the multiple-day conference program for students and young music professionals. ADE University offers interactive discussions, keynotes, Q&As, workshops and network sessions that cover every possible area of expertise, and features a wide variety of highly experienced professionals like Coone, Duncan Stutterheim, Polina Zakh, Sam Feldt and many more, all eager to share their knowledge. It will also play host to meditation and yoga sessions, and in their former auditorium you can find live music and DJs. Oosterbar, located in the basement of the venue, provides an intimate clubbing experience. It combines industrial design with an energetic vibe, and they are set for several disco and house line-ups with Gabriel Ananda, Moody Mehran and Stefano Richetta amongst others.

Just around the block you will find The Royal Tropical Institute. The monumental renaissance building is home to the Tropenmuseum (Museum of the Tropics). Its museum bar will be transformed into a club venue during ADE, where de Lotgenoten are hosting two nights featuring Joey Negro, Jeremy Underground, San Soda and others. The Djoon Experience returns for a night inspired by African music of yesteryear, the present and the future, dishing a sonic display of afrobeat, house, and afro tech.

Gaming, dance classes and films
While heading in the direction of Amstel Station, you will pass Q-Factory, which is managed by students and houses recording studios, a cinema and a club. The venue will be the home of no less than eight events. You can take masterclasses and show off your gaming skills during a tournament hosted by Spinnin' Records. Get in the know about the industry at Revealed's conference, do some skyline sessions with Lucas & Steve and much more.

A short stroll will take you to the Mirror Centre, where DJ Mason guides dance classes. This time around it will only take place on Friday and is organised by the ReDiscoverMe Foundation and DansPark, an organisation that helps people with a chronic movement disorder.

Heading a bit north, you will encounter Studio/k where you can check in for a preview of the movie Beats (2019), or witness an even more cinematic experience with Alex Brajković and Tomer Baruch, who will play a live version of the soundtrack of the classic Metropolis (1927) alongside the movie. Honouring this year's ADE theme - 100 years of Electronic Music Instruments - Studio/K is also set to host a program with modular synthesizer virtuosos who will fill the night of Saturday October 19th with a plethora of electronic music, ranging from noise to ambient, techno, house and more experimental sounds.

From Bob Sinclair to Paul van Dyk

For those in search of larger venues, Panama is your go-to, hosting a series of nine nighttime events with Aly & Fila, Bob Sinclar, Bryan Kearney, Ferry Corsten and Paul van Dyk to just name a few. While you are in the neighbourhood, don't forget to visit the beautiful Muziekgebouw Aan 't IJ for an audiovisual performance by Tim Hecker and Caterina Barbieri and three nights of Audio Obscura.

Going further south, Amsterdam Studio's is the place where you can find the Verknipt events, showcasing house and techno with artists like Deborah de Luca, Fatima Hajji and Luuk van Dijk. Zeeburgereiland is home turf of the Recycle Lounge Gallery Club, a former center for asylum seekers that now accommodates a student society where you can visit art exhibitions and music and find the likes of Jaydee in their DJ booth.
