Dave Clarke (NL)

Artist & Speaker (Artist)

If techno is a counterculture, Dave Clarke might be its ideological compass.

He is also, arguably, Britain’s greatest techno DJ (though he’s long lived in Amsterdam). Also a producer of repute, his albums – Archive One, Devil’s Advocate, and The Desecration of Desire – project raw personality, and his mid-‘90s ‘Red’ singles were gamechangers.

These are the facts. But Dave Clarke has moved beyond his past. He curates his DJ life ruthlessly, so seeing him play has a renewed sense of occasion. While he’s been everywhere from Tomorrowland to Glastonbury, these days he chooses quality over quantity, sending smaller, more devoted dancefloors nuts, worldwide. And in October 2025 he presented the 20th anniversary of Dave Clarke Presents… at Amsterdam Dance Event, featuring Trentemøller, Helena Hauf, and Digital 21, a band featuring Placebo’s Stefan Olsdal.

The last performer hints at Dave’s outlook, closer to the spirit of punk than contemporary club culture. His Saga Series radio show has become a hub for gritty, vanguard groups, their songs mixed in beside old faves.

“In that world, it’s about music and music only,” he states, and his drive away from predictability has seen him put together a neo-classical album, Monochromatic Observations of a Restless Earth, with violinist Mathilde Marsal. Inspired by the vast, alien beauty of Iceland, its release is pencilled for the end of 2026.

He also runs sessions on Music and Politics at the Haarlem Conservatorium, inspiring students to realise music can be a force for good. It’s all a long way from the 1980s Brighton teenager taking lousy jobs in shoe shops to subsidise his income from badly paid local DJ gigs.

His younger self saw the culture-changing potential of the late 1980s rave explosion. Under the name Hardcore he released a debut single on XL, and recorded for legendary Belgian techno imprint R&S and his own Magnetic North label. Soon he was remixing the likes of The Chemical Brothers, Underworld, Kevin Saunderson’s Inner City, Moby, and Leftfield.

In more recent years, that same creative ambition has been channelled into photography. He had his first solo exhibition at Amsterdam’s prestigious Leica Gallery in autumn 2024. Such projects showcase Dave Clarke as a polymath, but delve deeper into his well-established rep and there’s plenty to chew on: the 130,000-selling ‘World Service’ mix CDs; Skint Records’ anniversary reissues of his albums; 2007’s ‘Remixes & Rarities’ collection; 2016’s ‘Charcoal Eyes (A Selection of Remixes From Amsterdam)’, his work as part of duo _Unsubscribe; and his deathless White Noise radio show, broadcasting on Ireland's RTÉ 2FM for more than two decades.

But Dave Clarke evades easy definition, a DJ-producer but a complex soul, well known for calling out the ethically dubious, even when it brings flak his way. An older statesman now, he remains uncompromising in life and in art. The man in black is finally fully inhabiting his moniker of many years, the Baron of Techno.
