The State of Emergency: Music Leaders at the Forefront of Change
Speakers: Gideon Berger (Block9), Matt Black (Boot Up The Network), Sarah Williams (IMPEL)
Moderator: Ruth Daniel
We are living through a period of profound global instability. Climate breakdown is accelerating, authoritarianism is rising, and war, displacement and inequality are reshaping societies in real time. This panel explores not only how music reflects global emergency, but how it mobilises people toward solidarity and action. When traditional political systems stall, creative communities often respond faster and across borders.
The conversation draws on recent flashpoints where questions of ownership and politics in music have collided publicly, from artist-led resistance to private equity's growing stake in festivals and venues, to the rapid, coordinated mobilisation seen around Together for Palestine and related solidarity actions across cities including London and Paris.
This is about infrastructure as much as inspiration: how relationships, trust and shared culture allow rapid mobilisation, and how solidarity translates into resources, awareness and tangible support. In periods of instability, music does not exist in isolation - the real question is how cultural platforms are used, who they serve, and what outcomes they help to produce.
