Sub_Bar
A new music format for deaf communities
After two years of events and research in Berlin and Lisbon, we can say that there is a new music format ready to take off in Europe. This format allows deaf communities to fully participate in the adventure and ecosystem of music without losing a shred of poetry. In fact, it opens the doors to a new dimension—a bodily dimension.
Sub_Bar has taken an important step in the history of music by exploring what remains once sound is removed. The premise of sub_bar is, in fact, not to use speakers or acoustic material during their events, focusing instead on the creative efforts of a growing international community of artists and the attention of their audiences on the vibrations and changes that occur within the body. Never before have beauty and poetry been such a physical matter.
Channel 1 showcase
The day's program includes a showcase of nine works by deaf and hearing artists who are part of Channel 1, the sub-frequency music catalogue by Sub_Bar. These works, created by artists such as Byetone, Stefanie Egedy, and John Kameel Farah, approach vibrations in distinct ways, stimulating a wide range of sensations and emotions.
This will be followed by two live performances: one by Atelier Francesco, the founder of the project, and the other by Calvin Khan, a deaf artist who participated in the sub_bar Academy in Berlin. Atelier Francesco will present "Blink Time," a performance that intertwines nature and music and represents a journey through life, space-time, and the human condition. Calvin Khan, in his solo debut, presents a journey that evolves from soft to intense, from sound to pressure, showcasing his deaf perspective as an invitation to strengthen the bridge between hearing and deaf communities.
Program:
Byetone “16 Hz”
Stefanie Egedy “Subbass Invigorating Dose”
John Kameel Farah “Cauldron”
Daisuke Ishida “Into the hottest July (2023)”
Oströl “Lost Keys”
J2DR “Wünschs für selbst zu erforschen deine Ziel”
Cigarra “Cave”
Martine-Nicole Rojina “Autopoiesis”
Myles de Bastion “LoFreqOh Structure”
Performances:

Calvin Khan LIVE
In the venue’s foyer, there will be a station with synthesizers and haptic technology, allowing participants to personally experience the effect of vibrations on the body, supported by a professional who will facilitate the first approach. This experience is suitable for both hearing and deaf individuals, as well as for first-timers and music professionals.
Important note: Sub_bar’s concerts exist in the ephemeral space between 20 Hz and 150 Hz. Once they finish, they’re gone. Created by hearing and deaf artists, these concerts can sometimes induce panic attacks due to the immersive haptic stimulation. If you don’t feel well, find a space where the vibrations are less intense.

Please double-check the promoter's or venue's website to be sure you can access the event!
Yes, the Pro Pass grants you access to all ADE official festival events. Even if a festival event is sold out, you can still access the event with your ADE Pro Pass wristband. During ADE there are over 500 festival events and hundreds more cultural and conference events you can enter with the wristband. One thing to keep in mind is that there is a limited capacity that each venue can take into account for ADE Pro wristband holders. This means that, for some of the more crowded events, you have to arrive early to ensure attendance. Once capacity is reached, ADE Pro holders will be let into the event on a one in-one-out basis.
We dance together, so please be mindful of yourself and each other. We expect an open attitude from our visitors towards other guests, regardless of their origin, gender, sexual orientation, religion and age.
