William Kouam Djoko (NL)

Artist & Speaker
William Kouam Djoko was born near the Dutch The Hague and was raised by a Cameroonian father and Dutch-Ukrainian mother. Ever since his childhood he’s been affected by rhythm, soul and music in general. Starting off as a (professional) dancer, he ended up with playing music when he joined forces with Pete Bandit, Jason Shae and Newton Da Costa to form Jason & The Argonauts. William’s solo career, which really started in 2008, with a full 12” on ThirtyOneTwenty, will always benefit from all the experience he accumulated being one of the Argonauts. The “Hard Loving” release earned international respect and gave William a perfect way to present himself as one of Amsterdam’s most diverse and creative house producers. His sound, which characterized by full grooves with freaky bits and pieces, got floors shaking from Italy to Berlin and from Barcelona to London. While modern dance floors get flooded with laptop live acts that use nothing but Ableton and a mouse, William takes it to the proverbial next level. Using the old-school Chicago and New York acts as an influence and using his skills he gained from MC-ing as J&A, William uses the microphone as an essential part of each live show. Talking to the crowd, making a true connection and doing live vocals, it al makes William’s act so much more fresh and exciting. This fresh-ness has earned him spots at festivals and places like Sonar, Awakenings, Free Your Mind, Fuse, Trouw, Melkweg and at Sonne Mond Sterne. But William’s story doesn’t stop there; since last year he is also the proud promoter and resident of a brand-new club night at Trouw called ‘Late Night Society’. Together with partner-in-crime Boris Werner, they have welcomed guests like Wareika, Jamie Jones and Visionquest.
