AFRICAN GOLD: Behind the Doc with Philou Louzolo & Wietske Overdijk
Speakers: Philou Louzolo (Artist), Wietske Overdijk (Film Director & Artist Booker)
Moderator: Soraya Pol (Documentary Director & Researcher)
Level: Foundation
For the last two years, documentary maker Wietske Overdijk has been following DJ and producer Philou Louzolo, capturing every step of the Dutch artist’s journey. With roots in Congo, Nigeria and Sierra Leone, Philou has been shaping a forward-thinking blend of house, tech, melodic and afro house since 2016. His 2017 breakthrough led to performances at Berghain, Tomorrowland, Fabric, Awakenings, Lowlands, DGTL, Dekmantel and more, earning support from Black Coffee, Dixon, Solomun, Honey Dijon, Jamie Jones and Laurent Garnier. This rise in popularity also brought a renewed perspective on the music Philou performs, the stages where he feels at home and the vision he wants to share.
Having captured much of this period of transformation, the result of Overdijk’s filming is the short music documentary AFRICAN GOLD, which will pre-premiere at ADE Lab. Vibrant and intimate, it explores the power of music, the importance of family and the universal search for “home.”
After the screening, Philou Louzolo and Wietske Overdijk will reflect on the two-year journey of making the film and discuss how its themes reach beyond Philou’s own career to touch on the evolution of electronic music culture.
AFRICAN GOLD will have its cinema premiere during ADE CLUB Lab at the Melkweg Cinema.
