A talk on building a community, label and/or party meant to enhance, protect and provide a stage for minorities. The all-encompassing framework of capitalism, globalization and digitalization have reshaped the way labels operate. There’s been pressure on promoters, label owners and artists to reinvent the formula of pushing new music.
Nowadays it’s not uncommon to see record labels operating in multiple fields aside from releasing records. Some are or are developing into communities, content platforms, meme sources, club nights and/or political outlets. How to start building a label and/or community in this day and age, how to maintain it? And how do you protect, enhance and provide a stage for the (local, national and global) artists under your wings, especially if they’re a minority? During this talk, we’d like to ask a small number of Dutch record label founders how they are operating in the scene, and to share their knowledge with each other including the audience. It is not only relevant to other record labels, but equally so for other stakeholders like musicians, promoters, bookers, admirers, managements and so forth, as they are also part of this network.
