How Can Festivals Accelerate Circular & Climate-Neutral Transitions in Urban Areas?
ADE Green - Frédéric Hocquard (Deputy Mayor), Marie Sabot (WE LOVE GREEN festival), Rosan Kocken (Regional Minister), Christina Bilde (Roskilde), Jasper Goossen (Apenkooi Events)
Moderator: Chantal Inen
The urgency to accelerate the transition toward a more circular and climate-neutral society is widespread. With 70% of the world population living in urban areas, most of the sustainability challenges culminate in cities, making them key in the transition towards a circular and climate-neutral society. With thousands of festivals taking place in Europe, reaching millions of people, we truly believe that festivals can contribute to solving these challenges in close cooperation with cities.
The circular transition and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions are the two main priorities of the European Union and its member states. On a European level, ambitious goals have been set by the European Green Deal, the EU ‘Fit for 55’ package, and the EU’s new circular action plan. The government of The Netherlands and the City of Amsterdam embrace these ambitious goals. However, achieving these goals will require a joint effort of all sectors and society.
Festivals can contribute by limiting their own negative impact, inspire a green movement among their visitors and serve as a testing ground for circular innovation for cities. Ultimately, the aim is to achieve full circularity and climate neutrality by 2050. This seems far away, but to change our linear and polluting systems we need to act now, and important steps must be made in the coming years.
Panel discussion: how can festivals and cities help each other?
Together, the international Green Deal Circular Festivals and the City of Amsterdam have invited several European festivals and cities for this panel. Examples of collaboration between festivals and cities will be shared, in which festivals provide living labs for sustainable innovation and a platform to involve society and new generations in an inclusive transition. How can we learn from each other? What are the struggles in working together and how can cities and festivals engage in collaborations to accelerate change? The speakers will be announced soon, so stay tuned!
