For Fake's Sake

It is increasingly apparent that it doesn’t cost much money to buy fans, likes, and plays, then scale it up to a regular income. While this may only represent a fraction of the income of a successful artist, it is also a tiny outlay when compared to potential earnings, which also qualify for tax deductible status as advertising. So why is no one being held to account for this? How can this digital arms race be dealt with without naming and shaming, to get the industry back to a place where it's not money that talks, and to safeguard the future of the scene from vacuous, same same “artists”. And then there are the influencers, some are real, but many are not. How do you recognise the genuinely influential ones? ADE talks to agents, managers, festival organisers and artists to find out what could and should be done.
