City Parades - The How, The Why and The Where

Depending on how you look at them, street parades can be seen as a form of personal and collective liberation or as an ecological car crash. The fans come in their hundreds of thousands in order to spend the day dancing, and of course they generate noise, and traffic disruption, as well as tons of litter. But what do these huge events achieve and what do they say about both society as a whole, and more specifically about the social dynamics of the electronic scene? What do the host cities get out of them from both a positive and negative point of view? Are they growing in popularity and if so, why?
