Tom Middleton (GB)
Tom Middleton is a multi-award-winning composer, DJ, sound and sensory designer, and pioneer of Sonic Therapeutics. As one half of ambient and experimental electronic pioneers Global Communication and Jedi Knights, he helped define the sound of a generation. Mentored by Aphex Twin and classically trained as a cellist, Tom blends musical mastery with neuroscience, acoustic ecology, and psychoacoustics to explore how sound regulates the nervous system and modulates mental states.
He has toured 58 countries, performed to millions, and seen how music improves mood, connection, and mental health. As co-founder of White Mirror, he creates science-backed audio and sensory content for Calm, Apple Music, Sleep Cycle, and UMG’s Sleep Better, helping millions sleep better every night, while also supporting anxiety reduction, focus, and productivity.
His salutogenic design approach spans digital therapeutics, immersive spaces, and multisensory experiences. He has conducted resonance experiments in sacred sites like the King’s Chamber of the Great Pyramid, exploring archaeoacoustics and the roots of sound as medicine. His research links ancient sonic rituals with modern audio practices and explores the potential of AI-generated sound for personalised wellbeing.
A vocal advocate for mental health in the music industry, Tom co-authored the sleep chapter in Touring and Mental Health: The Music Industry Manual and formerly co-chaired the AFEM Health Group. He sits on the Global Wellness Institute’s Music for Health & Wellbeing board, where he helps define industry best practices, frameworks, and language for music as medicine. He also champions ethical, artist-first AI tools to empower creators and protect human artistry.
Tom is committed to scaling evidence-based, humanity-first interventions through music and design; bringing calm, care, and connection to a world in need. For him, music isn’t just art or entertainment, it’s a tool for recovery, resilience, and transformation.
