Milly on Air ( Milly Chowles)


Milly Chowles is a touring DJ, broadcaster, podcast host and accredited
recovery coach working at the intersection of electronic music, mental
health and recovery. Ten years sober, she brings both lived experience and
professional broadcasting expertise to conversations that are often left out
of the music industry. She taught the UK's first DJ course for people in
recovery from addiction, in collaboration with Sober Spaces and Bristol
Drugs Project Creative Communities
, which was featured on BBC News.
She has also founded two free community initiatives: one supporting
people in dance music through Dry January, and another connecting sober
and sober-curious people on the festival circuit.
She hosts Back to Life, a podcast exploring music, recovery, mental health
and the healing power of creativity, featuring guests including Logic 1000,
Eris Drew and Princess Superstar
. The podcast has been covered by
Mixmag
, DJ Mag and Podbible. At IMS Ibiza, she recorded a live episode
with DJ Paulette on sobriety in the electronic music industry, and is about
to interview Shanti Celeste for a live recording this autumn, she also
curated and moderated a panel on sobriety in the music industry at
Brighton Music Conference
, speaking with Denis Sulta, Brandon Block and
Savannah
.
Milly has spoken at Lost Village and Boomtown Festival on recovery,
sobriety and systems change, appeared on the Logic 1000 and Helena
Sta
r’s podcast Therapy, and spoken at Being the Story. She has been
interviewed on both BBC Radio 1 and BBC Radio 4 on recovery from
addiction, and produced and authored four series of BBC Woman's Hour
radio reports covering women and addiction, trauma recovery, mothers and
the care system, substance misuse, women leaving prison, and toxic
relationships.
Alongside her own speaking work, Milly leads workshops on podcasting and
radio production for organisations including Saffron, Clean Break and
Sound Delivery
. Between 2017 and 2019, she was Young Persons
Programme Manager at Raw Sounds in Brixton, leading a music
participation programme for young people with complex mental health
challenges. She trained in trauma-informed practice with Clean Break in
2019, is an accredited Recovery Coach with Portobello Behavioural Health,
and is an accredited Coach with the MOE Foundation.
