Lee-Ann Johanna ()
Lee-Ann grew up in the Netherlands, with Caribbean roots in Bonaire, Curaçao and Sint Maarten. She started in the local scene as an audio engineer and moved into live music production and curation. Soon she was using sound to dig into her own heritage and the links between Afrological music styles. She went on to program at Melkweg, Paradiso and Podium ZWART, curating shows and festivals, and recently started as live music programmer at A'DAM Toren.
In 2023 she founded Vanguard, a platform for homegrown soul, R&B, hiphop and jazz. It runs a blog, a production house and its own events, and helps artists grow and get on stage. Next is the Vanguard Listening Room, a pop-up community space for listening sessions, workshops and talks about music from across the diaspora. It mixes music, food and knowledge shared across generations, and is being shaped together with the community.
As a DJ she goes by Lee-Anngineering. Her aim is to energize, educate and electrify bodies. Her sets travel through time and space, from Curaçao in the '90s to Portugal in the 2000s, with Caribbean electronics and riddims she makes herself. She plays the sounds she grew up with next to new music she finds on her travels. Expect the unexpected, and come along for a riddim ride on her rollercoaster called life.
