ADE Editorial Picks: Live Performances

Thursday, 21 September 2023
Electronic music in all its shapes and forms: that's what ADE is about. With more events than one can count, picking events that make it to your tight schedule can be quite challenging. To help you a bit, we've selected events that feature multi-faceted live acts, crossovers between genres and instruments, and music magic in its purest form.

Modern-day supergroups and super samplers

Tinlicker & Metropole Orkest, Melkweg

Each year, Melkweg is home to Metropole Orkest and their selected guest act for one of the opening concerts of ADE. The 2023 edition of the ADE Festival starts with a crossover between the multiple-Grammy winning, world leading pop & jazz orchestra and Dutch duo Tinlicker, that doesn't shy away from emotional dance music. We can't wait to hear what kind of musical magic this year's crossover will bring us.

Comforter2 Album Release Show, Paradiso

Now this is your modern-day supergroup: Tammo Hesselink, Ricky Cherim from Meetsysteem, and M4ry team up with Fokke de Wit on stage to perform their new album 'Tell Me Something Happy (Before I Fall Asleep)' in full at Paradiso. The synthesizers' melancholy sounds blend perfectly with the electronic soundscapes and arpeggios, so do pay Paradiso's upstairs room a visit on ADE Wednesday if you don't shy away from electronic feels.

Overmono (live), Paradiso

Another live act that isn't scared to get emotional, deep, and melancholic is the Welsh duo Overmono. The two brothers known for their Dobermann mascots have just released their first album, 'Good Lies', and are nothing but a compelling live-act. Euphoria and darkness go hand in hand on ADE Thursday on this breakbeat-filled night. Throw in a few R&B and rap samples, and you get a taste of what Overmono's made of.

Halina Rice - Immersive Spatial Audio & Visual Liveset

Part rave, part art-happening: Halina Rice's immersive spatial audio & visual live set promises to be a wondrous night for those looking to expand their beliefs. The electronic music producer combines her captivating and explorative live music with mixed reality visuals and a bespoke light show. Rice performed her immersive show at Earth, London last year, and now invites ADE visitors to travel to other worlds in her temporary spaceship with her.

Charming and critical

Minimal Collective presents Post Hypnotism, De School

Amsterdam-based curators, platform, and event organisers Minimal Collective take over one of the most-visited, underground clubs of the city. The day-and-night programme on ADE Thursday features interdisciplinary art forms, including panel talks on the impact of AI in the art and cultural sectors, plus live music. Before the club night with DJs like GiGi FM & Sunju Hargun and Spekki Webu & Woody92 kicks off, the Kantarion Sound night transforms De Aula into an immersive listening space.

Spatial Oddysseys, CLUB RAUM

CLUB RAUM is a new space built from inside the queer community of Amsterdam, especially for that community. Besides announcing immediately sold-out club nights, RAUM organises its own Arts & Culture event just weeks after opening. LYDO makes their world live premiere at CLUB RAUM during Spatial Oddysseys event on ADE Friday, ranging musically from visceral and grooving to mind-bendingly experimental. R3LN4CHT joins the program with a presentation of their series of works on critical spaces, in which they question the focus on 'safer spaces' and the meaning of that phrase.

Welcome to Afrofuturism: Space Is The Place (1974) + Drexciya (2010) + Groove God, Jaïr Darnoud (LIVE), Kriterion

Kriterion and CPT Collective partner up to present a night filled with film and live music on ADE Friday. Next to the two films visitors get to enjoy, the evening will be rounded off by artist Groove God, who provides visitors with an alt-groove session. Jaïr is a rhythm-driven musician who exclusively uses material from (un)released tracks off his own label 'Honingrec'. Kriterion is one of Amsterdam's most charming film theatres, completely run by students.

Control panels and effect pedals

Doka Electronic Live Sessions, Doka

Doka used to be the darkroom where the photos for the Dutch newspaper Volkskrant were developed. Volkskrant has since left the building, but Volkshotel has given the darkroom a new destination: a club called Doka. Julien Chaptal, Marijn S, and Papi Gaba come together in the dark basement to reshape the sounds of drum machines and synthesizers to cosmic melodies.

TNP ADE’23, Cinetol

Three rooms, ten acts, DJ sets, and live music: TNP returns to Cinetol with music for the curious ears without fears. Baby's Beserk (live), Deboleena, Elise Kravets, Peachonfuse, and many others spice up the night on ADE Saturday at the cultural centre slash film theatre. Cinetol hosts many live events throughout the year, and we're excited to see them curate a lineup that fuses electronic music with other genres like indie and rock.

Nils Petter Molvær Solo, Bimhuis

Moving jazz into the 21st century, only a few do it this well. Nils Petter Molvær is a Norwegian jazz trumpeter, composer, and producer, and, above all, pioneer of live electronics. Molvær creates a complete musical universe on the spot with control panels on his left hand and effect pedals under his feet. He performs solo at ADE, something he rarely does.

Secret Artists in Residence - Live on Stage, Felix

After a successful run at Best Kept Secret Festival and last year's ADE, Secret Artists in Residence joins ADE'23 with an all-star lineup. Alberta Balsam, Mathew Jonson, Pitto, Sarah Neutkens, Sie Medway-Smith, and STERAC strike down at ADE Pro Business Hub Felix Meritis, where they stay on the top floor in a one-off music studio created just for ADE. The artists collaborate, jam, and work on new music and showcase their findings on ADE Saturday.

Speedy J presents STOOR Live, Paradiso

One of the most asked-after events returns to Paradiso for not one but two nights. STOOR is Speedy J's brainchild that saw the light during the pandemic. The Dutch producer invites a few of his favourite and most experimental live artists to join him on his fully improvised hardware jam session in front of an audience treated with a stage design to bridge the gap between artists and themselves. Supergroups Out Of Place Artefacts (Vril and Rødhåd) and Voices From The Lake (Donato Dozzy and Neel) join Speedy J on stage on ADE Sunday, ready to dive into the never-ending techno jam that was one of last year's highlights.
