Sometime in 2021, Jack Madin & Ed Service, an Australian based duo known as SHOUSE went from unknown artists living and working in Melbourne - one as a primary school music teacher the other as a arts community manager - to worldwide sensation, off the back of what would become the most ubiquitous breakthrough modern era dance anthem to shift conversations around how underground music can connect with audiences.
What’s truly amazing about this story is how this can happen to a four year old song - an epic dark wave disco odyssey spanning over 8 minute song, featuring saxophone and flute flourishes, and a choir of local friends, on “Love Tonight”, SHOUSE created an overture that morphed from underground classic, to message of unity during the great global pandemic, into a worldwide release anthem and phenomenon beyond dancefloors. That this would occur without TikTok, without major radio support in the USA or UK, without influencers, and importantly without a major label backing is truly amazing. It’s the story of true independence, tenacity, and an unbreakable belief in the power of dance floors - proving the underground can still break a record and artist worldwide.
For the first time at ADE, the artist, management, label, agent, marketing and radio team behind the phenomenon get together to talk about the amazing journey to over a billion streams, doing it without a major, about the “Post-Love-Tonight” dance music landscape, and most importantly how crucial to our industry it is to still create anthems for the dancefloor.
