How to Archive and Exhibit Club Culture?
How do you archive the legacy of club culture for future generations? And how do you share it with the public in the form of exhibitions? During ADE, the Amsterdam City Archives is organizing an event focused on archiving and exhibiting club culture in light of the exhibition To Dance is to be Free: Club Culture in Amsterdam from 1980 until today.
These days, there is hardly any photography in clubs; phone cameras are covered at the entrance. How can we exhibit the current night in 20 years if there is no photographic material? What from the current era should be preserved to provide a good picture of club culture in 2023? Many clubs and organizations communicate through social media, and promotional materials like flyers have become entirely digital. How do you preserve the online world of club culture?
The event begins with an introduction by guest curator of the exhibition, Manique Hendricks, on the importance of archiving and exhibiting club culture. Followed by a panel discussion with experts from archives, the cultural sector, and the club scene, including tips and tricks for archiving.
