Tribes Presents: Deep Dive -The Club Sounds of South-Africa
Boddhi Satva, Que DJ, Charisse C
Moderator: Sagid Carter
Amsterdam’s pace-setting clubnight TRIBES and Team Beats present a deep dive into the electronic music scene of South Africa - from Amapiano to Afrotech and from Afrohouse to Gqom. Join this insightful conversation moderated by host Sagid Carter on the creation and coming-of-age, the global impact, and the latest trends and developments of South-Africa’s most succesful club sounds and scenes.
With Que DJ, the young, talented gqom producer, DJ and performer from Kwa Musha in Durban, South Africa, who is renowned as a pioneer of the Gqom genre as part of multi-award winning Gqom duo Distruction Boyz, and also has been making major waves with his debut EP as a solo artist: ‘We Don’t Play The Same Gqom’. His recent style of Umkhunkulu is a hardcore and hypnotic sub-genre of Gqom with a heavy bass sound.
And Charisse C, DJ, artist, founder of Abantu, one half of The Ascension and NTS Resident, draws her selections from her experience of existing between worlds. Firmly rooted in her Zimbabwean and South African heritage, raised in the UK; her taste is curious, soulful and bass-heavy, with a playful and intentional demeanour. Spearheading South Africa’s electronic soundscape, including global giants Amapiano and Gqom; she describes herself as both a vessel and storyteller.
They are joined by producer, DJ, label owner, entrepeneur and honorary ambassador of the soulful side of Africa’s electronic music scenes, Boddhi Satva has been spearheading the spread of African club sounds into the wider global electronic music scene since 2015, while effortlessly skating across borders and genres. He is equally at home in Lisbon or London as he is in Bamako, Dakar or Nairobi and doesn’t just reflect a new epoch of creative outpouring across the diaspora, he embodies it.
