How did House become so White – Towards a fully inclusive Electronic Music Scene

Bambii, Karen Nyame KG, Rahaan

Moderator Sagid Carter

It’s almost ADE Beats 2022 time, on Friday, October 21st, in Tobacco Theater in Amsterdam. EAnd every

year ADE Beats focuses in its program on the crucial and foundational impact black creatives have and have had when it comes to electronic music.

In this vibrant keynote panel we discuss the black and queer roots and essence of house and electronic music at ADE Beats, with special emphasis on its evolution towards a scene and industry that became predominantly and extremely white at the top and behind the scenes. Coupled with an outline of steps the global professional community could - and should - take towards a much more inclusive electronic music scene and industry - without limitations and marginalization’s and with respect to its cultural and demographic foundation.

The heavyweight international line-up for this interactive talk consists of three strong, well-respected, and outspoken DJ’s and producers for whom this pressing issue is both personal and professional. Legendary U.S. house pioneer Rahaan has been building his stellar international reputation since the 80’s when he started spinning disco and house music at house parties across Chicago and he has a unique and insightful insider’s vision on house music’s evolution that spans well over three decades. Karen Nyame KG is one of the most advanced producer-artists in the UK, a champion of amazing percussive club sounds, from the UK Funky movement she came up in but also felt marginalized in, to her exciting current sound with influences from Ghanaian highlife and South Africa gqom and amapiano, among others. And trailblazing and exciting DJ and producer Bambii from Toronto who as touring DJ , curator, and genre jumping producer is pushing back on the paradigm of electronic music and sharing her experiences.
