ADE 2019: MusicTalks with Malcolm Cecil

In 2019, we honoured a special ADE MusicTalk by the legendary modular synth-pioneer Malcolm Cecil. Cecil’s music and pioneering techniques will be most familiar to most ears thanks to his work as Stevie Wonder’s personal synth guru, helping sculpt the unique sonic landscape of Wonder’s peerless mid-70s run of albums with T.O.N.T.O. aka "The Original New Timbral Orchestra", the first, and still the largest, multitimbral polyphonic analog synthesizer in the world. Plenty of electronic music heads will know his influential ambient / soundscape / psychedelic work with T.O.N.T.O.’s Expanding Head Band too. But Cecil has a history as a jazz musician going back to the 1950s, and has worked with legends like Quincy Jones, Gil-Scott Heron and The Isley Brothers along the way. Having him in Amsterdam to illuminate our theme of 100 years of electronic music instruments - bringing some old instruments from his own private collection into the bargain - was exciting for all of us.

Even though travel by flight is currently not prohibited, we do not encourage global travel to Amsterdam during ADE. Our team is creating an online-first format to ensure everyone can enjoy the event without the risk of spreading the COVID-19 virus.

If you are planning to visit Amsterdam, please make sure to check the Dutch guidelines beforehand.

The current Covid-19 measures include keeping a distance of 1,5 meters and wearing a face mask when using public transport. Other general rules include washing your hands often, cough and sneeze into your elbow or disposable paper tissues and to stay home when you’re experiencing symptoms of a cold and/or fever. More information on the current COVID-19 measurements in Amsterdam can be found here.

The select number of ADE Special seated concerts have been set up in close coordination with the city council and the venues are obligated to operate within all COVID-19 guidelines in order to ensure everyone's health and safety.

The minimum age depends per event. Most clubs in Amsterdam are 18+ but some may have a higher minimum age. Please double check the venues website to make sure you can enter the event.
