Critique of the mainstream media for being too mainstream has been a constant refrain in the music world for decades. But how much do we understand how playlists are constructed. For this session with Xite Director of Music Curation, Paul Natale, BBC Radio 1 host Danny Howard and guests, we bring together expertise from across TV, radio and streaming to focus on how songs that are on their playlist are selected and to show how we’re moving from a generalist-audience traditional model to more user-specific types of platforms. As a microcosm of how the processes work, we’ll try to trace a line from what an artist wishes to express visually, through what the label looks for in a video director, how the director realizes the artist’s vision, how marketing teams use music videos to promote the artist, all the way through to what music curators look for when choosing videos to add to playlists. In essence, we’ll follow the journey from the creative vision to playlist curation.
