Who’s Looking after Next-Gen Talent? Forget the Majors

Independent labels have almost a 40% market share of the global pop market, but, unlike major labels, they do not suffer from the stress of manufacturing a hit for a tiny profit, plus they are wholly owned and operated. Their primary mission is artist development, and they build careers for artists that tour for decades. The majors have largely dropped out of artist development, so they haven’t built catalogues for 20 years, preferring instead to manufacture music for artists that tour only the 20 or 25 major markets and a handful of capital cities. These same artists average 9.1 writers per hit song and are lacking staying power. So the burning question is, who will replace The Stones, The Eagles, U2, Prince.....?
