How Gen-Z Is Discovering Music Through Social Media

Gen-Z is by far the most tech-savvy generation yet. As the musical appetite of Generation Z continues to grow, so will their desire for musical apps to enrich the listening experience. TikTok, formally Musical.ly, has exploded in popularity and has helped new talent be discovered through the platform. The recent success of Lil Nas X is proof of this phenomenon when the track “Old Town Road” was embraced by TikTok influencers as the background music to something called the “Yeehaw challenge,” where users transformed into cowboys at the drop of a beat. Gen Zers are also discovering music through Instagram Music Stickers that are almost globally rolled out. Instagram is becoming the hub for day-to-day storytelling; and with the partnerships with Shazam, Soundcloud, and Spotify, licensed music has become the soundtrack for everyone’s day-to-day story.
