Hauke Egermann is an internationally recognized expert in music psychology and systematic musicology. With a rich academic background spanning systematic musicology, media studies, communication research, and neuroscience, he earned his PhD in Music Psychology/Neuroscience from the Center for Systemic Neuroscience Hanover in 2009.


He has held research and teaching positions at leading institutions worldwide, including McGill University (Canada), Technical University of Berlin (Germany), and Queen Mary University of London (UK). From 2016 to 2023, he was Assistant/Associate Professor at the University of York (UK), where he founded and led the York Music Psychology Group. Most recently, holds a Professorship in Systematic Musicology at the University of Cologne, where he directs the Cologne Systematic Musicology Lab.


Prof Egermann’s work bridges music, psychology, neuroscience, and technology to understand how we perceive, experience, and interact with music. His interdisciplinary approach combines empirical methods with theoretical insights from musicology and media studies, contributing to both academic knowledge and practical applications in music technology and the creative industries. He has (co-)authored over 100 peer-reviewed academic outputs that have been published in high-ranking academic journals. He has lead large interdisciplinary and collaborative research projects that received over 5 Mio. EUR funding from the European Union (EU Horizon 2020 programme), the Volkswagen Foundation, or the Einstein Foundation.
