Piron got into Dance music at the very young age of 10. He DJ’ed at school parties, was into collecting vinyl and playing records for hours and hours in his home bedroom studio, and started playing at different venues in the Netherlands at the age of 14. Five years later, he started his professional career working for a DJ promotion service at the age of 19, after which he joined Purple Eye Productions. For Purple Eye, he released records by the likes of Ferry Corsten, Marco V, and Armin van Buuren. Warner Music Benelux asked Piron to set up a dance division in 1999, making him the A&R manager of three Warner labels for three and a half years, including Warner/Chappell. During this period, one of the acts he signed exclusively for the world to Warner/Chappell was none other than super star DJs Above & Beyond.
In 2003, it was time for a new challenge; Maykel and his business partners David Lewis and Armin van Buuren set up Armada Music. Within 12 years of its existence, the label has grown into a haven for the lovers of trance, house, techno, progressive and deep house with promising sub-labels, having its day-to-day business handled by Piron.
Under his management, Armada Music has been voted ‘Best Global Record Label’ five years in a row. In 2010, 2011 and 2012, as a crown to all of his hard work, Piron received the International Dance Music Award for ‘Best Record Label Promoter or Exec In-House’, and he was once again nominated for the award in 2013 and 2014.
In early 2012, Piron was awarded with a ‘Feather’ — a prize for someone within the Dutch music industry who has made an extraordinary contribution to Dutch music. He is the youngest person to have ever received this prestigious award. 2014 also saw a record number of IDMA nominations for Armada Music, counting up to 21 nominations. Furthermore, the independent Armada release, ‘This Is What It Feels Like’ from Armin van Buuren feat. Trevor Guthrie, was the only Dutch release in 2014 to be nominated for a Grammy.
2015 in turn counted several global hit singles, including Armin van Buuren feat. Mr. Probz – ‘Another You’, Lost Frequencies – ‘Are You With Me’, and Lost Frequencies feat. Janieck Devy – ‘Reality’. ‘Are You With Me’, for instance, took numerous #1 positions all over the globe (including the coveted prime position in the UK Singles Charts), and received certified gold, platinum and multiple times platinum in no less than ten different countries.
In addition, Maykel Piron is a co-founder and member of the board of Cloud 9 Music, set up in 2004 with Raymond van Vliet as co-founding member and Managing Director. Cloud 9 specializes in music publishing, compilations, and artist development, and represents a variety of music styles, ranging from dance and pop, to children’s music and hip-hop.
Maykel Piron on the swift growth of Armada Music: “It's all very well thought out; there has always been a strategy. In the beginning, when we didn't have as many labels, it was always a target to grow to where we are now. I love waking up early to start working on what I love so much: Dance music. It’s an ongoing passion to work with talented artists and release their music on a global scale. I can’t get enough of it and I hope I will still be a part of this game at the age of 80!”
Recently, Maykel Piron and Armada Music opened a new management office. Chased Management, the brand new management division, incorporates Armada’s booking branch ‘Armada Bookings’ and currently represents Andrew Rayel, ANOTR, Blasterz, Calvo, Dave Winnel, Mark Sixma, Sandro Silva, Simon Valente and Years.
According to Maykel Piron, Chased Management has been created to obtain the top spot in the management branch within Dance Music: “Chased Management offers a great diversity of services to current and future artists, ranging from 360 deals to custom made arrangements. Chased Management strives to be an all-embracing company for artists that want guidance, expertise and professionalism when it comes to their music and performing career.” Read more
