Sound System Culture As A Force Of Healing
Speaker: Linett Kamala (Interdisciplinary Artist & Educator),
Moderator: Tasha Slagtand (Artist)
Inspiring artist and academic, DJ and community organiser Linett Kamala celebrates 40 years of being a sound system culture pioneer. Known as Notting Hill’s ‘Sound System Queen’, she was one of the first female DJs to perform in a sound system setting at the event, and is now one of Notting Hill’s organisers, serving as its Board Director. In the summer of 2025, Kamala organised the LIN KAM ART Welness Space at the Notting Hill Carnival, providing an opportunity for guests to engage more deeply with the roots and culture of the event. At ADE she will share her invaluable insight and unique combination of artistic practice and academic research into the healing and therapeutic impact of carnival and sound systems. Kamala has been globally moving sound system culture forward for four decades, from organising full sound system takeovers at The British Museum and The British Library, and actively amplifying the presence of women in sound system culture, to building her own, and touring with, innovative sound systems that stand at the heart of her powerful and thought-provoking, unique art and wellness projects - shaping the culture in profound ways.
