ADE launches Arts & Culture program with creative residencies, artistic crossovers and more

Tuesday, 06 July 2021
Dance culture, building on an unconditional expression of freedom and personality, has inspired creativity and exploration among so many of us from all over the globe for decades now. The explosion of electronic music has sparked not only dancefloors around the world, but many more artistic and cultural expression alike.

Electronic music and art are inseparably bound together, and over the past years ADE has been the stage of dance operas, exhibitions, installations, one-off performances, documentaries and much more, connecting dance culture with a multidisciplinary world of arts. Through its newly launched Arts & Culture program, ADE aims to let you explore the world of dance outside of the dancefloor this October.

Continue reading below for some of the first confirmed highlights of this year's ADE Arts & Culture program.

Pushing the limits

Pushing the limits

Nxt Museum and ADE are joining forces to support visual and music culture. Their artist residency program focuses on collaborations between local and international visual artists and musicians to develop two one-hour long immersive music performances, hosted on Nxt Stage during the opening night of ADE 2021 - Wednesday, October 13th.

Mindful raving

ARK Rave studio is an ambitious concept for overall fitness, wellness, and dance activism by Connor Schumacher. During ADE, the Rave Studio is a space where you come to practice being human by engaging the Raving body; precariously progressing in all directions. A dynamic meditation, a high intensity interval training and a rave aerobics session, simultaneously.

With ravers existentially starving during recent lockdowns and night culture gone from sight, there seems to be no light at the end of the tunnel. And yet there might be. Award-winning director and designer of immersive, large scale experiences Nelly Ben Hayoun believes nothing is impossible — During ADE she reaches beyond borders to satisfy your need to spiritually reconnect to the rhythm of the night...

An invitation to participate

Become an ADE entrepreneur yourself: Music Moves and ADE are collaborating on training music fans to become social entrepreneurs in the music industry. Music Moves aims to make the dance floor accessible for everyone. By following the free 4-part Music Moves course (Dutch), participants organize their own music event for people you normally don’t meet on the dance floor: the elderly, kids with special needs, newcomers or homeless people. Get trained by industry experts in social entrepreneurship, leadership and event organization. As a participant of Music Moves in Amsterdam, your event will officially be a part of the Amsterdam Dance Event program!

Open call: Develop your talents, meet new people and make an impact on society. You can learn more and sign up here. Note: The 4-part course is in Dutch only.

Amsterdam is filled with unique locations and hideouts off the beaten track during ADE. Not just spaces to dance, but there are many more surprises to be found here. One of these hidden gems is Villa Buitenlust, in the midst of Westerpark in Amsterdam, where people who find themselves overwhelmed or temporarily lost in their home environment can stay for a while. For the first time during ADE, Villa Buitenlust invites artists to enjoy a residency in which they can develop new work, connect and give an intimate presentation of their progress.

Open call: There are two open slots for a residency, so if you want to reconnect with nature and your artistic practice (related to electronic music), pack your mobile studio and apply for a room at Villa Buitenlust before and during ADE.

Taking it outside

Foam will present a site-specific installation and special performance in collaboration with ADE, challenging the traditional notion of photography by experimenting with different processes, textures and more. During a special performance, the installation will come alive through sound and light to create an immersive experience.

RÆV REHEARSAL invites you to rehearse new forms of gathering in the time of Covid-19. Together with the participants, Tools For Action, NDSM and Floor van Leeuwen create a movable light show to a techno beat with floating, flashing clouds, portable inflatable subwoofer sculptures and a decentralized speaker system, swarming over the nightly NDSM-wharf during ADE. It’s time to rekindle the lights of nightlife.

Helena Basilova

Beyond the beat

On ADE Thursday, the 17th century Portuguese Synagoge will be home to the experimental sounds of Morton Feldman's subversive Triadic Memories — performed on the grand piano by acclaimed pianist Helena Basilova, completely unplugged and surrounded by 800 candles. Basilova invites you to listen to the silence between her piano sounds; to the space that arises when everybody sits still.

The Nederlands Kamerkoor (Dutch Chamber Choir) focuses on stories of powerful women in Ester, a performance between electronic and chamber music. The choir is led by Slovenian conductor Martina Batič, accompanied by the electronic sounds of the Iranian-American turntable artist Shiva Feshareki. These two drivers of empowerment, new and old, are linked by the dance of Niaya Jones a.k.a. BOSSLADY, an eighteen-year-old dancer from Los Angeles.
