Manpreet Brar (NL)
Manpreet Brar is a Visual Anthropologist researching the dynamic relationship between music, religion, and culture. Her film Colored Frequencies is a musical journey in which we learn how dimensions such as creativity, religiosity and spirituality relate to how various musicians and creatives in Amsterdam Zuidoost experience blackness. During her work as a junior researcher at the Meertens Institute, Manpreet investigated how using visual anthropology as a research method can enrich and diversify archives. In this project, she created the ethnographic film Kawina Collections: Afro-Surinamese Music, Heritage & Spirituality, which explores what kawina means to different musicians, producers, DJs, and listeners. Through films like these, Manpreet highlights how cultural heritage is actively lived, (re)made and experienced. Driven by a desire to make stories visible, she explores how music, voices, and heritage are part of everyday life. Awaaz-a is her platform for showcasing these sounds, voices and stories (awāzẽ, awāzā̃, âvâzhâ).
