Lisette Ros (NL)

Artist

Lisette Ros, a Dutch conceptual and performance artist born in 1991, explores the interplay between society, identity, and the human experience through her work. Using her body as a medium, source and tool, she challenges societal norms and exposes the consequences of socio-cultural practices. Identifying as humanimal, woman, queer, and fluid, Ros transcends conventional categories, employing recognizable elements in her performances to analyze routines, question conventions, ingrained patterns and their self-evidence.

Her interdisciplinary approach emphasizes the centrality of her (physical) presence, with her body serving as both a tool for research and for exploration. Through deliberate reiterations of gestures, she heightens spectator discomfort, embodying feelings and vulnerabilities to convey a profound message about existence.

Her work has been showcased globally, including performances at events like the Venice Architecture Biennale (2016), South By Southwest (SXSW) in Austin (2018) and MWoods Museum in Beijing (2019). Ros completed a residency with Marina Abramović in 2021 and has received grants for her ongoing ‘My Self’ series investigating the self and the identification process. In 2023 she started her research for the sixth installment titled 'My Self, the (Unfamiliar) Roots’ in Java, Indonesia, mentored by performance artist Melati Suryodarmo. In 2023, she unveiled '“Presence in Absence” Piece one' (2023) at Galería Lü in Mexico City, and 'Piece two' and 'Piece three' at Arti et Amicitiae in Amsterdam, the Netherlands as parts of her research on the absence of metamorphosis through experimenting with the absent body.
