While artists Iris Kensmil and Remy Jungerman represent The Netherlands at the biennale in Venice, other artists of the same background run into obstacles and closed doors in the art world. (Popular) music has been dominated internationally by black music for years. Recently Dutch hiphop artists and artists inspired by the African diaspora dominate the local charts. Meanwhile mainstream media keep these artists at bay. What does this mean for the cultural state of The Netherlands and its future?
Artists: AiRich, Vesuhely Americaan, Marcel van den Berg, Sara Blokland, Jesper Buursink, Frederick Calmes, Monika Dahlberg, Brian Elstak, LIONSTORM en Shertise Solano.
Guest curator: Raul Balai
Open until October 19th
AiRich brings together elements from diverse sources such as science fiction, fantasy, pop culture, fashion and music, creating challenging combinations of Afro-culture. In her art work AiRich has developed her own style of photography, together with futuristic styling and costumes. Icons, myths or legends with spiritual aspects, or which concern creation myths, play an important role within her work. Her own Planet AiRich Show – a multi-disciplinary performance series in which, among other things, fashion, dance, body painting, spoken word, and music come together – is a place where her many qualities converge.
The works on display, HOLD ME TIGHT, EYE TRAVEL and I NEED SPACE, were all developed through a collaboration with the artist Dogon Krigga and for Mental! they have been given a new interpretation as a single installation.
