Mette Sterre (NL)

Artist

Mette Sterre is a visual artist who investigates the limits and transformative potential of the body. Her work resists categorization, fusing performance, sculpture, body masks, and digital technology into immersive, otherworldly environments that explore the threshold between the organic and the artificial. By entering her work, we are cast into the materialisation of her mind processes: a sensorial and embodied experience.

Mette’s practice considers how the human silhouette can be disrupted and reconfigured, both materially and ideologically. Drawing on ideas of post/transhumanism, queer feminism, and science fiction, the artist approaches bodies beyond the human and as more than just substantial mass (flesh). Utilising DIY prosthetics, her work is a call-to-arms to break away from the Western obsession with the sanctity of the human form. She believes there’s a strong connection between the manual labor of making the body masks—often time-consuming and labor-intensive—and the experience of embodying and reclaiming them.
