“I don’t do styles; I play music. Not classical, not jazz, not pop, but any music that speaks to me and is a true expression of something. I am particularly curious about the music that lies between the styles.” With percussionist Barry Jurjus, Mellema mainly plays his own work for saxophone, percussion and electronics and all music that comes their way.
After a period of serious illness, Mellema reinvented himself as a musician. He was influenced by electronic music (drum-n-bass, hip hop), jazz, minimal music and contemporary classical music.
Mellema and Jurjus share a hunger for new music that cannot be categorized. After a series of special concerts as a duo, the chemistry between Mellema and Jurjus was crying out for more.
