Charlie Philips

Charlie is an England & Wales qualified solicitor specialising in international music rights and licensing issues. His work covers a broad range of issues relating to today’s digital music and creative industries. One of his key areas of expertise is in international performance rights licensing, which entails assisting independent music companies and rightsholders to maximize revenues generated by broadcast and public performance of their recordings. This work involves ongoing dialogue with music companies and producers’ collecting societies in some 65 countries around the world, as well as working with international ‘major’ companies, Impala, the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), and independent trade associations around the world. Charlie is also an expert on the interactions between music rights and data, and represents WIN member record companies within ISO, most particularly in respect of developments over ISRC and other identifiers.
Prior to joining AIM, Charlie was a legal adviser at IFPI, managing their international Performance Rights Committee work. Before this he was Head of Music at Napster, which followed five years as Head of Music at Capital Radio London, running their DAB and internet radio stations.

Charlie is a published author on legal professional issues, with four editions of his career guide ‘Working In Law’ (Crimson Publishing) available. Charlie has a degree from Oxford University in Egyptology and Akkadian, and an MA in Middle East Historiography with Anthropology and Arabic from SOAS (University of London).
