Amsterdam Dance Event at Het Concertgebouw kicks off on Wednesday 16 October with a live show by Weval in the Main Hall. Earlier this year, Weval's new album ‘The Weight’ was released. It is Weval's second LP for the famous German label Kompakt. On this special occasion, Harm Coolen and Merijn Scholte Albers and band will develop a brand new live show. The duo is known for their warm, layered synthesizer melodies and hypnotic rhythms which provide an intense, musical trip. Weval’s sound can be described as music that can lift you up, and make you feel hopeful in a mellow way. In this way, Weval appeals to both techno fans and fans of bands like Radiohead, Boards of Canada and Massive Attack.
For their second album ‘The Weight’, Weval wanted to relive “the emotions they felt back in the first days of making music together: the naïve feeling of absolute, creative freedom”. Also, the album was the result of an entirely new way of working as far as the duo was concerned: more playful and unpredictable. “We were switching from guitars lying around to piano, onto our own synths and the most cheap quirky toy synths you can imagine”. With the help of sound engineer David Wrench (Frank Ocean, The xx, FKA Twigs, Caribou) Harm Coolen and Merijn Scholte Albers have recorded all their own samples, voice and almost every instrument out of the box. According to Weval, 'The Weight' exudes with that transformative richness, free from limits and rules, except perhaps to "do spontaneously and to not overthink”.
