What Will the Next 10 Years Bring the Indie Community?
15:00 - 15:45
DeLaMar Theater (D5 Panel Room) | Marnixstraat 402, Amsterdam
Digital music rights agency Merlin celebrates it's 10th birthday. This marks an important moment for independent labels in the history of digital music exploitation. Merlin represents indies’ commercial interests in a fast-changing market. By negotiating hundreds of deals with platforms such as Spotify, Deezer, Facebook and YouTube, Merlin has transformed the independent sector. Its anniversary offers a chance to look back at what has been learnt and also look forward. Trade associations also play a key role in Merlin's work. They help combine forces. They also push policy makers to fix the value gap, address the power gap, and improve finances. IMPALA celebrated its 15th birthday last year and has just helped secure an important vote in the European Parliament. What can we learn from the insights Merlin and IMPALA have gathered? What does the future look like for the Indie sector?
