Phil van Dulm and Alexander Bartels, musically known as Wanderwelle, produce electronic music that balances between the genres of ambient and experimental techno. Their debut album ‘Lost in a Sea of Trees’ was released on the Canadian label 'Silent Season’, where they explored the rich Slavic folklore and the ancient pagan tribes that once roamed the European woodlands. Field recordings play a prolific role in their productions, which they collected in Russian, Czech and Dutch forests. After the release of the album, Wanderwelle played a 2.5 hour live set at the legendary Berlin club, Tresor.
Last month, their new album 'Gathering of the Ancient Spirits’ sold out at the distributor in 7 hours with a repress coming early November. The album is inspired by the last years of the life of Paul Gauguin that he spent on the islands of French Polynesia. It tells the alternative history of his search for a land untouched by modern society and whose inhabitants were still dependent on the gifts of nature and connected to their ancestors. The music was used in the documentary series ‘Krabbé zoekt Gauguin’ in which Jeroen Krabbé visits the islands of French Polynesia.
For the exhibition ‘To the beat of my own drum’ at Nieuw Dakota, Wanderwelle created the soundscape for the installation by Heleen Blanken, on view from 12. till 21 October. The 20th of October Wanderwelle will perform an experimental ambient live set at the gallery.
