KochXBos Gallery | Eerste Anjeliersdwarsstraat 36, Amsterdam
KochxBos Gallery is proud to present 'Life inside a pixel', an exhibition with new works by Dadara. The origin of the works lie in Dadara's Solipmission Installation on Burning Man. He was locked up inside a big black box under the hot desert sun. It was probably Dadara's most intense experience ever: a Solipmission Impossible. The missing pixel of Reality
Dadara lived 24/7 in his own created reality. Hundreds of visitors told Dadara and his two other crewmembers how reality outside the box looked like. The Solipmission crew then attempted to depict the outside world on the inner walls of the box purely based upon what visitors told them, without ever seeing it with their own eyes: literally experiencing reality through the eyes of hundreds of others.
Life in the black box was an experience that felt like living in a missing pixel of reality. After an intense week Dadara experienced his coming out-of-the-box when he returned to reality.
Survival of the box-fittest - those who fit best inside the box
After returning to Amsterdam Reality he crashed, closed the curtains, and did not open them for an entire week. He needed to lock himself up in his own reality to process all that had happened. Like a space traveller or a deep-sea diver need to decompress, adjusting to another reality was definitely a process.
As part of the recovery process Dadara started to paint: a way of exploring and digesting everything that had happened inside the box, but could not be expressed in words. He painted boxes. Small ones. Big ones. Sometimes filled with colorful, surreal lifeforms living within the strict box boundaries. Sometimes filled with people, often naked and vulnerable. Grey totalitarian box worlds with no escape. Colorful worlds made out of boxes with an occasional box instead of the sun rising over the horizon.
How will Reality look like if everything and everyone will be fitted inside a box? Is it possible to climb out of our reality box? Or do we just end up in another one surrounding us after freeing ourselves from the current box? And another one after that?
The sparkling, geometrical works that are the result of this search give an insight into life within a pixel. And each and every one of them shows that Dadara's vision can’t be limited by reality.
Dadara's artistic development is a fascinating journey, originating in Amsterdam's house culture in the late 1980's. Flyers, record covers, and crying baby speakers marked the start of an impressive career as a designer, cartoonist, and painter. After the turn of the century, extravagant installations and performances in public spaces became Dadara’s focus.
KochxBos Gallery was founded by Esther Koch and Hans Bos. This controversial, colourful, and avant-garde gallery in the centre of Amsterdam presents solo- and group shows by a number of personally selected, inspiring artists including Ray Caesar, Claire Partington, Sarah Maple, and Jed Martin.
