Where does your own identity flow into extravagance? Night life has the power to transform you to someone else. Within the diversity of parties, clubs and club goers you can be who you want to be at that moment.
The exhibition ‘Extravagance in Uniform’ that takes place during the Amsterdam Dance Event researches the connection between personalities, group identity and expression. Four upcoming artist show diverse approaches of expression and identity in their works:
Lieselot Elzinga (Rietveld, Fashion) researches how identity is being changed and augmented on the stage. In her graduation collection “Baby’s Berzerk” she searches for ways to directly grab someone’s attention with exaggerated forms and prints. She is inspired by her own experiences as a musician and performer.
Rebecca Eskilsson (Sandberg, Radical Cut-Up) seeks for a material form of individuality and identity. She creates photographical scenes with new meanings around human behaviour and how people are influenced by others. She uses old and new materials, from plastic to antiques.
Andrew Tseng (HKU, Illustratie) forms new identities and magnifies personality traits by capturing them in fantasy figures. He makes screen prints and riso prints in which strange characters, humorous situations and psychedelic worlds are depicted in a colourful and playful manner.
Meret Zimmerman (Rietveld, VAV) draws attention to the dialogue between the entertainer and the observer. In the installation “I’m not here to break you, just to see how for it will bend” she shows a female body from all perspectives. She thereby questions beauty standards and the search for perfection.
