The LGBTQI+ community has had many gains to celebrate over the last decade. In more and more countries same-sex marriage became legal, the doors for transgender people have opened, and there are currently five openly gay world leaders. But there have been some enormous setbacks as well: the public punishment of gay people in Indonesia, Trump’s transgender ban and the ‘gay purge’ in Chechnya. Less than fifty years ago, the Stonewall riots erupted at the end of June 1969 in New York, when the police raided the Stonewall Inn, a well-known gay bar. It was illegal then to engage in homosexual acts, even between consenting adults acting in private homes. But the Stonewall Inn was the safe haven for the poorest and most marginalised people in the gay community including  drag queens,  transgender  people, effeminate young men,  butch lesbians,  male prostitutes, and  homeless youth. After living in fear for years, this last raid was the final straw. With the Stonewall riots, male, female, gay or straight came together to protest for their right, marking the beginning of the modern movement for LGBTQ+ rights and establishing the basis for the Gay Pride events that are held annually throughout the world.  House music wouldn’t be the phenomenon it is today, Madonna wouldn’t have vogued and fashion would be very vanilla if it wasn’t for the major contribution from the gay underground scene. The ability to finally be yourself plays an enormous part in many artistic decisions. In this panel, we discuss the importance of nightlife when it comes to establishing equality, and how clubs not only functions as a safe place to be yourself and share that feeling with kindred spirits, but also as a creative breeding ground for modern day pop culture.
