Dadara designed his first Outland Records cover 25 years ago, which was the first in a large series of record covers and flyers for one of the defining labels of dance music in the beginning of the nineties: a symbolic moment in time to look back at those early nineties as well as looking forward to his current work at festivals such as Boom Festival Official and Burning Man.
Dadara will talk about those early and future days and the impact of art on music culture in general in a conversation with Dutch journalist and dance pioneer Gert van Veen at Dadara’s latest show at the KochxBos gallery. This will start at 17.00.
Gert van Veen has undoubtedly been one of the most influential people in the Dutch dance scene both as a journalist, being one of the first to write about dance music for newspaper de Volkskrant, and as the founder of QUAZAR, which has been at the forefront of the Amsterdam techno and house-scene since the early nineties and celebrated their 25th birthday last year at the Amsterdam Paradiso.
Ben Liebrand made his very first edit almost 40 years ago using a small Akai cassette deck. It set him on a path to the dance floor remixing artists including Phil Collins, Sting, Tina Turner and Salt'N'Pepa. His radio show 'in the mix' inspired an entire generation including Tiësto and Armin van Buuren. It was Ben's love for music as well as technology that also brought visuals to his audio adventures. 3D video clips for artists including Alan Parsons lead to a collaboration with Dadara, resulting in portraying Greyman on one of his 'Grey' missions.
Dadara's artistic development is a fascinating journey, originating in Amsterdam's house culture in the early nineties. Flyers, record covers, and crying baby speakers marked the start of an impressive career as a designer, cartoonist, installation artist, and painter. After the turn of the century, extravagant installations and performances in public spaces and festivals like Boom and Burning Man became Dadara’s focus.
With his current series of painted Mandalas (Mandalaras) on view in the gallery, he created meticulously crafted round spinning paintings with lots of detail providing a meditative focus in a world which seemingly spins out of control.
Six of those paintings have been picked by designer MARCEL WANDERSto become Signature carpets in the Moooi Carpets collection and are on view around the corner of KochxBos at Moooi Amsterdam
