fanfare | Da Costakade 150, Amsterdam
For the second edition of the fanfare-initiated series "Parallels of the Equator", the space will be turned into a visual take over, focusing on the link between design and music.
By producing a new vinyl record and a trilogy of accompanying record sleeves, the series investigates the relationship between electronic music and graphic design. We invite producers, artists and music-makers to provide an unreleased piece of music, this new recording will become the basis of the design by 3 different graphic designers, revealing different takes and reflections on the translation of the sound. The outcome will be presented as a 10inch vinyl record with 3 unique risograph printed record sleeves, which are for sale in a limited edition.
For the Amsterdam Dance Event this edition's music is provided by Strange Boutique, existing of visual artist/designer Nicole Martens and curator Femke Dekker. A long hidden gem that they produced together will finally see the light of day during this project, and will be accompanied throughout the evening by a audiovisual performance by the duo. The record sleeves will be designed by three of Amsterdam's finest designers, all of whom are operating in the field of music and design.
These are the designers:
Edwin van Gelder (NL) is the founder of mainstudio, a design studio with a focus on typography and graphic design. With a true love for electronic music he is – amongst many other projects – responsible for the identity of “de School” and has designed record sleeves for the Amsterdam based recordlabel Something Happening Somewhere.
Christopher Valentini Gabriel (NE) is the co-founder of Children of the Light, a collective investigating light as matter with a large focus on their work in relation to sound. Besides this he runs an independent graphic design studio – called A Studio –through which he also works a lot in the musical and cultural field.
Bart de Baets (BE) is an independent graphic designer with a unique typographic style, whom’s works spans over the entire cultural field. Amongst applied assignments, he also runs his own fanzine called Dark & Stormy, and is a teacher at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and the Royal Academie of the Hague.
- The setting will be casual, and we invite you to drop in at any time, or hang out through the day. Additionally there will be a series of talks, with the designers sharing insights and reflections.
This project is initiated by the design platform fanfare founded by Lotte van de Hoef and Freja Kir.
The events within fanfare is made possible with the generous support of the Stimuleringsfonds Creative Industrie. For the occasion of ADE cold beers will kindly be provided by our friends of Warsteiner.
