Joe Claussell - The Evolution of My Sound
13:00 - 13:45 | Free entrance
Compagnietheater | Kloveniersburgwal 50, Amsterdam
All successful artists have a sound, but some are utterly unique, instantly recognizable and loved by millions. How does an artist arrive at that point and what happened along the way to change the course of their sonic explorations? What constituent parts of their sound come from their earliest musical experimentation, and which bits are the result of years of experience, or even of an accidentally pressed button that provided an unexpected solution? What is their favorite sound from nature and do they incorporate it into their work? Expect lots of sound samples and anecdotes! All this and more in the series: The Evolution of my Sound at ADE Sound Lab.
Joaquin ‘Joe’ Claussell (US)
With a musical career spanning over two decades and counting, Joaquin ‘Joe’ Claussell has witnessed first-hand the many evolutions taking place in the culture of dance music, and there is no doubt that he has contributed to quite a few of them. Hailing from the diverse streets of Brooklyn New York City - performing under many aliases and wearing multiple hats, Joe Claussell’s contribution to the arts has in many ways helped shape how dance music is produced, remixed, played and even listened to today. Since he started on to the underground dance music scene back in the mid 90’s, Claussell has created three game-changing music emporiums, beginning with the globally respected Dance Tracks Record Store NYC, as well as two independent music companies. Both Spiritual Life and Sacred Rhythm Music & Cosmic Arts were the forefathers of a new genre of dance music called ‘Spiritual House” and are universally recognized as two of the top dance music labels ever created. Claussell has countless remixes and productions to his name for artists such as Radiohead, Nina Simone, Herbie Hancock, Chaka Khan, Cassandra Wilson, Cesaria Evora, Nitin Sawhney, Tony Braxton, Louie Vega of Masters at Work, Gilles Peterson, Radio Slave, and the son of the master of afrobeat Femi Kuti, tto name just a few. As a DJ, his career was initiated by joining forces with disco legends Francois Kevorkian and Danny Krivit - together they formed and nurtured the world famous Body & Soul NYC events. It was here where Claussell’s career as a DJ took off and he has been traveling the globe non-stop ever since. Currently, and alongside his busy schedule as a record label boss, band member, producer of both music and videos, and touring the globe as a DJ.
Claussell is also pursuing other projects endeavors. These include Fields Of Frequencies, a collaboration with respected theatre director Lidy Six of the Netherlands. Fields of Frequencies is a spatial light - and sound installation generating a profound experience of pure colour. It is a project where Claussell is the sound designer, creating musical soundscapes, using the vibrations of colour and light that are produced and shaped and by Lidy Six.
