10 reasons to visit ADE Playground

At the very heart of this year’s festival is ADE Playground, a five-day series of events consisting of pop-up stores, hardware workshops and master classes, as well as photography exhibitions, fine art, films and documentaries, all of which reflect the many faces of global dance culture. The initial ADE Playground program is already online, with more information to be added as we get imminently closer to the festival.
Here are 10 ADE Playground things to look out for (click on the title for more info):
1/ Kompakt at Oz pop-up
After celebrating their 20th Anniversary last year, German’s leading electronic label Kompakt will bring back their pop-up store to the Oz. studio in Amsterdam’s Red Light District. Visitors will have the opportunity to get their hands on new exclusives, meet the team and see daily performances from the likes of Michael Mayer, Tobias Thomas & Kölsch and more.
2/ Amsterdam Dance Event drawn live
During the event, a team of skilled illustrators will be crafting a series of hand-drawn sketches, depicting the day-to-day goings on throughout the conference. These will be available for viewing at the MixTup Gallery, which will be constantly updated as the conference goes on. Free access for ADE Card holders
3/ Uncovered: the art of the album cover
Over at Mini Galerie, ADE Playground will be presenting an exhibition highlighting some of the more original, hand designed artworks that have graced the scene’s LP sleeves over the past 12 months. Read more about the exhibition here.
4/ Boy George at ADE MusicTalks
As part of this year’s ADE MusicTalks, Culture Club’s Boy George will be talking about his illustrious career, how he topped the charts and what life is like now as an international touring DJ. 5/ ADE Ableton Playground Space
Ableton returns to ADE Playground where they’ll be hosting workshops relating to their Live 9 software package and innovative new Ableton Push MIDI controller while well-known artists will be dropping by to share their wisdom in the form of exclusive talks and performances.
6/ Focusrite Novation Showcases
Novation will also be returning to this year’s Playground, where the pioneering firm will be presenting a wide range of gear, including hardware synths like the Bass Station II and MiniNova, innovative MIDI controllers such as the Launchpad and Launchkey series, as well as an extended family of digital DJ controllers and accessories.
7/ Native Instruments Showcases
Native Instruments will be showcasing their latest production software, gear and DJ accessories, as part of this year’s Gear program. As with every year, the German music firm will have some of the biggest names in the dance scene to showcase their goods.
8/ Mix, Mingle & Move
Mix, Mingle & Move over at Amsterdam’s art’otel will combine funk, soul and hip-hop alongside photography and illustration exhibitions, providing what they describe as the perfect place for ‘mingling’ in an ‘unpretentious’ environment. Free access for ADE Card holders
9/ ADE Sound Academy presents: 4D Sound
The revolutionary 4D SoundSystem will be on display throughout ADE; a “spatial instrument” that allows users to “walk through space and experience sound from all directions”. Celebrated artists including Vladislav Delay, Max Cooper and Stimming will all play on the system over the course of the event. Read more about 4D Sound here. 10/ Films @ ADE
During the course of the event ADE Film will be showing a series of music related documentaries, including I Dream of Wires, Rewind 4Ever: The History of UK Garage, Gabbers! and Power To The People. Daily screenings are free for ADE Card holders (limited seats, full is full)
