Afrogrooves in /K

Studio/K facilitates and investigates protest music and social activism. That’s why - for this ADE special - Studio/K is joining forces with Afrogrooves.

- During Friday night, they’ll start with a critical panel discussion on protest music, social activism and the role of music in community building, speaking to a wide variety of revolutionary artists and social organizers. The discussion will be followed by a live music session: partially prepared repertoire but also largely improvised. The houseband of Afrogrooves will open the session, paying tribute to the incredible protest music of Fela Kuti. They will be joined by our special guest Kiala Nzavotunga, guitarist of Fela Kuti’s legendary band Egypt80. Afterwards they'll continue with an open jam session where all musicians can join. Make sure to bring your instruments!

- For the late-night hours DJ Abena will deliver the beats and throughout the whole night you can admire an exhibition from Annelise Hewitt-Hewie-Lewis. There will definitely be something for everyone.

Time schedule:
21:15-23:15 - Panel discussion about protest music and community organizing (full line-up below)
23:15-23:45 - Afrobeat DJ set by Steven Jones

- Afrogrooves is a growing community of people with a shared love of West-African music. During open jam sessions the hypnotizing sounds of afrobeat, afrofunk and highlife are explored and celebrated. While music is sometimes unjustly depoliticized, Afrogrooves, as a platform and music collective, takes a stand against racism, sexism and other forms of oppression. Together we try to create an inclusive and creative space for highly danceable energetic music.
