Nine films and documentaries not to miss

The annual ADE by Day program features multiple films ánd talks about electronic music culture, grab the ADE Card to get free access.

Following up on recent announcements about Nicolás Jaar and Vincent de Belleval and the ADE Zen Space, we continue with another list to help you navigate trough ADE's extensive program.

This year's film program consists of 18 great titles, including live scoring events, after talks. Q&A's and much more. The common denominator? Club culture is infused into all of them. Here are a couple of highlights to help you on your way.

Bruce Lee And The Outlaw (2018) + Q&A with the Director & Composer
Wednesday October 16th, 4 PM Pathé City
Filmed over six years, Bruce Lee And The Outlaw is a modern-day Oliver Twist story under the streets of Bucharest. Spitfire Audio presents a special screening of the award winning documentary, which was featured at IDFA last year, to provide an in depth discussion between the director Joost Vandebrug and composer Daniel Gadd about the making of the documentary and the process of film-scoring.

Midnight Frontier (2019) - Screening + Paneltalk
Wednesday October 16th, 8.30 PM LAB111
The documentary Midnight Frontier tells the story of activists that stand at the frontline of LGBTQ+ activism in Georgia. They recount their experience during the International Day Against Homophobia, in which they were assaulted by thousands of anti-gay activists, led by the Georgian Orthodox Church. Club Bassiani, and their queer Horoom Nights, form their fort of resistance to homophobic violence. For them, nightlife in Georgia is not an escape, but a way to resist. It’s a fight that is not contained within the walls of the club, and amazingly unites friends and enemies through dance.

Metropolis (Fritz Lang, 1927) with live electric score

One of the most significant themes in Fritz Lang’s dystopian Metropolis is the blurred-to-nonexistent line separating man and machine, a theme which is manifested in various ways throughout the film. Human-like machines, mechanical humans, and above all the city of Metropolis, an enormous machine designed like a human and within it men, each of them functioning as a part of the machine.

As an analogy to that the new soundtrack performed at ADE will be based on archival recordings of factory machinery, on top of which Tomer Baruch & Alex Brajković will play drums and electronics. They will interface with the machines and embody a relentlessly repetitive mechanical music, reflecting motifs that would usually sequenced or programmed. By creating music which is in itself blurring the line between man and machine, by subjecting themselves to machine-like motions, the musicians will become a part of Metropolis, creating a disillusioned, intensified and darker than ever experience of the film.

Heian, a short film by Fatima Yamaha & Hidde Simons
Thursday October 17th, 7 PM Melkweg Cinema
Imagine: you’ve partied all night until the early hours. People going to school, work. All this normality sure looks strange. Heian is a short film by Hidde Simons featuring music by Fatima Yamaha, exploring the feeling of early morning alienation. After the screening there will be a Q&A with Fatima Yamaha and Hidde Simons.

Use Knife scores Le Coquille et le Clergyman (1928)
Sunday October 20th, 4 PM Eye Filmmuseum
Le Coquille et le Clergyman (1928) follows the erotic hallucinations of a priest lusting after the wife of a general. The Belgian duo Use Knife (Stef Heeren and Kwinten Mordijck) perform live to give an electro twist to this hallucinatory silent film classic that has been acclaimed as one of the first (and one of the best) surrealist films ever.

Beats (2019) + Kraak en Smaak
Sunday October 20th, 8 PM De Balie Cinema
In the mid-1990s, the United Kingdom was overrun by raves: illegal parties with heavy beats and an endless supply of drugs. The Criminal Justice Bill introduced by the government in 1994 criminalised ‘gathering around repetitive beats’. This led to massive protests and even more raves. It’s against this backdrop that the Scottish film Beats plays out, revolving around the strained friendship between teenagers Spanner and Johnno. A universal story about friendship, resistance and the power of being strong together, to the rhythms of a stirring soundtrack. Beats will be previewed before release at ADE. After the screening Kraak & Smaak will have an open hearted after-talk and conclude the event with a film and DJ set.

Watch your favorite dance classics at LAB111
Besides watching classic movies with new live scores and soon-to-be newly released classics you can also dive into some favorites of the past 20 years at LAB111. There’s screenings of 24 Hour Party People (2002), Interstella 5555: The 5tory Of The 5ecret 5tar 5ystem (2003), Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest (2011) and more.

The film program is accessible for ADE Card and ADE Pass & ADE Conference Pass holders.
