Moog Music explored the power of music with its Synthesizer Sanctuary at ADE Sound Lab

Thursday, 21 November 2019
The synth pioneer offered visitors opportunities to get hands-on and to find new experiences in electronic sound.

In the midst of ADE’s gear haven at De Compagnietheater, Moog created a psychedelic Synthesizer Sanctuary that stimulated the senses and promoted creative connection through a multi-coloured display of music machinery featuring self-guided lessons in analog synthesis. Their booth invited everyone to explore new modes of expression, and to dive deeper into the concepts behind creativity through a trio of panels.

Celebrating the Theremin
On Thursday, as part of the celebration of 100 years of electronic music instruments, the American synth makers honoured the birth of electronic sound with Austrian-born composer and musicologist Dorit Chrysler. She explored the Leon Theremin’s foundational instrument that paved the way for everything we do today.

Conversations with Moog

A day later, synthesizer pioneer Malcolm Cecil, producer and neuroscientist Floating Points, and Moog’s chief engineer Cyril Lance explored how one discovers a new electronic instrument, develops a relationship with its sound, and how that symbiosis evolves.

Saturday saw producer Stephan Bodzin and mixing powerhouse Hannes Bieger discuss the secrets, benefits, and challenges of integrating analog technology into the workflows of contemporary electronic music. The two shared their individual musical journeys with synthesizers. Contrasting the old and the new, Bodzin showed his digitally mapped custom setup and modern Moog synthesizer, while Bieger displayed his vintage 1960s Moog circuits.
