Femi Kuti and Robert Hood in conversation about the politics in their music during ADE Pro

Monday, 21 September 2020
ADE Pro will be hosting a virtual conversation featuring two veteran musicians who are also famously not afraid to let their politics inform their musical output. Robert Hood, one of a trio of founding members of Underground Resistance, and Nigeria's Olufela Olufemi Anikulapo Kuti, known to most of us as Femi Kuti, will be discussing the delicate and highly personal way that politics and music are, and always have been, inseparable in their lives.

Kuti is the son of Afrobeat legend and activist Fela Kuti, and the grandson of political campaigner and women's rights activist Funmilayo Ransome Kuti. He showed his true political colours in September this year when he stated publicly that he would not join Nigeria's ruling party, the APC, when he refused to enter politics as he had yet to find a party that has the interest of Nigerians at heart.

Robert Hood famously first came to wider attention as a member of one of the most radical and politically progressive musical collectives, Underground Resistance, as the group's Minister of Information. Although since then he has generally been better known as one of the inventors of minimalist techno, his recent track The Struggle, featured an acid-influenced techno backing overlaid with a speech by the activist Tamika Mallory given just after the murder of George Floyd. The B-side, meanwhile, samples the comedian and civil rights activist Dick Gregory on Save The Children.

The two will be sharing the issues that matter most to them, how that passion filters through into their music, their plans for the coming months, and how the pandemic has impacted their need to fight for justice for all of us.
