Secondcity

Born in the UK, but raised in Chicago during his formative years, Secondcity has a unique pan-Atlantic outlook on house music that takes influence from his exposure to both of these musical hotspots. As such, in the space of some 24 months, Rowan Harrington has accelerated into the collective consciousness of house heads around the world, namely through his UK chart topping summer smash ‘I Wanna Feel’ in 2014, but also via a series of highly revered underground cuts on some of the electronic communities most respected labels.

His inaugural year comprised the much-hyped four track EP, ‘The Story’, on Huxley’s Saint’s And Sonnets imprint, which reached the dizzy heights of the Beatport Top 10 Deep House chart. Throughout 2013, Secondcity continued to show everyone that his finger was firmly on the musical pulse, as demonstrated by his and Route 94’s sublime edit of ‘Freak Like Me’. With releases such as this a mainstay in the record bags of many of the scenes major players, Secondcity soon found the likes of Skream, Disclosure and MK all championing his 90s house sound.

Combine such DJ endorsement with Radio 1 support from tastemakers as varied as MistaJam, Annie Mac, Alice Levine & Phil Taggart, Skream and Zane Lowe, the high regard that Secondcity is held in by his peers is clear to see. But it was 2014 where Rowan firmly established himself in the minds of not only the dance community, but also the wider music buying public. His release ‘I Enter’ on Claude von Stroke’s DirtyBird BBQ Compilation signaled he had the ears of the established A&R’s, but it was ‘I Wanna Feel’, released on Ministry of Sound, that topped the UK singles charts in June of 2014. Arguably the tune of the summer, its catchy vocal hook and sun-soaked production sound-tracked many festivals and clubs across Europe. Its lasting impression did not go unnoticed by Zane Lowe who made it one of his hottest 100 records of 2014.

Following this Secondcity returned to the underground with his ‘Groove ‘N’ On' release on Defected’s DFTD imprint in late June. Nic Fancuilli also came calling and snapped up his four track ‘Technique’ EP which was released in July. Rowan then returned to MOS for ‘What Can I Do’ which featured Ali Love on vocals.
Moving into 2015 Rowan returned to Saved with his ‘Feel It’ EP which highlighted his versatility with a four track EP that bridges between deep house, heady, relentless techno and more laidback house vibes. As expected he has also been an in demand remixer, having worked his magic for the likes of Mendo, Dimitri Nakov & John Monkman as well as Carl Cox.

The past two years have seen Secondcity play some of the leading clubs and festivals including Warehouse Project, Fabric, Glastonbury, Pukkelpop, Extram Outdoor, Leeds and Reading Festivals, SW4, Creamfields, Hideout Festival, Sonar, Amnesia and Booom in Ibiza, a number La Familia shows for Nic Fancuilli, and many more.

His impact on the White Isle has seen him nab a residency at Tribal Sessions at Sankeys for 2015. Additionally he has made significant inroads in the USA, where he will return for a second 2015 tour, this time with his own ‘ENd’ series of events. Running throughout July and August the 10 date tour will be take all the house music hotspots that North America has to offer. As if that wasn’t enough, Rowan will spread his wings even further afield in 2015 with a tour of Australia and Asia also planned for later this year, it appears then that people across the globe will get a dose of Secondcity’s magic as his meteoric rise continues unabated.
