Matt Smallwood

Matt Smallwood

At a time when dance music’s commercial viability is consistently called into account, London born & raised
star in the making Matt Smallwood remains a rare ye
t reliable underground force. Now serving the ranks of
the mighty Toolroom Records as resident DJ for their award winning Toolroom Knights events, his ability to
triumph the ever-changing tides of global house music has forged him as an essential club contender of many
different strokes.
A DJ from the tender age of 15 whose ascendancy of the London underground tells tales of scribbling his name
onto freshly recorded TDK90s, wooing promoters and, lapping up the energy that surrounded his impending
craft, Smallwood’s career to date remains one of undying commitment. With more than a decade spent
developing his studio get-up across a range of styles and genres, his refined taste for club fuel from across the
board has shone throughout his every movement.
Between recent Toolroom exploits “How Does It Feel” which hit the Top 20 on Beatport, the Carl Cox
championed “Satisfy” and further remix duties for Wehbba’s “2 Sticks” on the mighty Material imprint,
Smallwood balances both sides of the house music coin like few others of his time. But with the likes of Carl
Cox dubbing him as his ‘Producer of the year’, consistent radio support from Mark Knight and Andi Durant
adding further feathers to his refined industry plumage, the scope of Smallwood’s musical legacy continues to
thicken with time. As forthcoming remixes for Steve Mac and studio collaborations with Mihalis Safras and
Rene Amesz would suggest, Smallwood continues to make big noise in all the right places in 2013 without
compromise on the creative stamina that first stirred him.
As a DJ first-and-foremost, Smallwood’s penchant remains wholeheartedly driven to providing killer
soundtracks to the global clubbing skyline. Armed with the ability to win over any dance floor before him, his
deep appreciation of fluid warm-ups, peak time party sets or afterhours run-downs alike have seen him deliver
the goods at every possible opportunity.
The proof is in the pudding as they say and the sweet stuff for 2013 includes a quarterly residency at Zurich’s
Station Club in Switzerland for Toolroom Knights and high profile debuts at Gatecrasher Birmingham
and the enigmatic Gallery at Ministry of Sound in London. Adding affirmative festival action into the mix are
further debut spots at Global Gathering alongside Mark Knight and Prok & Fitch then onto a main stage set
for Electrocity Festival in Poland with Eric Prydz and Dubfire! The company kept throughout the summer
season looks indicative of Smallwood’s well-deserved ascent to the very top of global club land and firm proof
of his exciting musical aura.
True to the mantra that energy, passion and persistence offer the essential keys to success, Smallwood’s
integrity and ambition add to his years on the underground radar to assert that amid the hustle and bustle,
London has given rise to yet another affirmative talent that has shown no signs of slowing down...
